Fleetwood Makes His Move in Bid for Fourth Consecutive Ryder Cup

Tommy Fleetwood climbed five places into second in the 2025 European Ryder Cup Rankings after a tied second place finish at the Travelers Championship on the PGA TOUR.

The three-time Team Europe man moves to 1,237.43 points after being denied a first PGA TOUR win by 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley, who triumphed at TPC River Highlands for the second time.

Should he qualify for Luke Donald’s Team Europe at Bethpage Black in September it will be Fleetwood’s fourth consecutive Ryder Cup after debuting at Le Golf National, Paris, France in 2018.

Fleetwood started the day three strokes clear but opened with three bogeys and a birdie in his first four holes, before steadying the ship and firing in two birdies at the 11th and 13th to reclaim a two stroke lead.

Despite a bogey at the difficult par three 16th hole, Fleetwood held a one stroke lead heading down the last.

He striped his drive 288 yards down the centre of the fairway, leaving a 135 yard approach shot. His second came up just short on the front edge, leaving him around 50 feet, while his nearest competitor – Bradley – hit his approach to within six feet.

Leaving six feet for par, Fleetwood narrowly missed before seeing 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Bradley duly holing to win the tournament by one stroke.

Fleetwood said: "I'm gutted right now. I've not been in that situation for a long time. It's probably the worst way to finish.

“When it calms down, the most stupid thing to do and the worst thing to do would be make a week like this a hindrance to what you do going forwards. I obviously played great, I put myself in a great position, I was leading the tournament for 71 holes. I just want to make sure that I can put myself in this position as soon as possible again and try and correct what I did this time.”

Meanwhile Rory McIlroy, who was confirmed as Team Europe’s first automatic qualifier last week, finished in a tie for sixth place after rounds of 64-71-68-65.

As it stands, McIlroy is the only confirmed player for Team Europe on 3,138.45 points, with Fleetwood (1,237.43 points), Tyrrell Hatton (1,216.55 points) Robert MacIntyre (1,212.11 points), Shane Lowry (1,202.11 points) and Sepp Straka (1,146.33 points) rounding out the six automatic qualifiers as things stand.

The qualification process will end at the DP World Tour’s Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, which concludes on Sunday August 24, 2025.
